			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Suffering from heartburn is a common occurrence for millions of people, and it can cause a disruption in sleeping habits and other everyday activities.</p>
<p>Acid reflux is a condition that is caused by the lower esophageal sphincter, which is the muscle located at the bottom of the esophagus. Since it can be difficult to avoid all of the foods that cause heartburn, many people use an antacid, which helps to neutralize stomach acid. The problem is that antacids also slow down digestion. <strong>Axia3® Prodigestive® Antacids</strong> actually IMPROVE digestion by including enzymes to break down food after a heavy meal.</p>
<p>The following discusses the most common foods and beverages that can cause heartburn.</p>

<p><strong> Tomatoes</strong></p>
<p>Tomatoes and foods containing tomato products are a frequent cause of heartburn. These types of foods are highly acidic and cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax, which allows stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus.</p>
<p><strong> Chocolate</strong></p>
<p>Chocolate is also a contributor to acid reflux. Due to the high fat content and the caffeine that is present in most types of chocolate, this food can cause stomach acid to leak into the esophagus.</p>
<p><strong>Soda</strong></p>
<p>Carbonated drinks such as soda cause heartburn by causing the stomach to become distended. This occurs as the carbonated bubbles enlarge inside the stomach and create pressure on the esophageal sphincter.</p>
<p><strong> Alcohol</strong></p>
<p>Drinking alcoholic beverages can also result in heartburn. While the majority of drinks containing alcohol have a low acidity, they cause the lower esophageal muscle to relax, which causes the release of stomach contents into the esophagus. Alcoholic beverages can also increase the amount of acid that is produced by the stomach.</p>
<p><strong> Citrus Fruits</strong></p>
<p>Due to their high acidic content, citrus fruits such as grapefruits and oranges should be avoided in individuals who experience frequent heartburn. Foods that contain acids will increase the amount of gastric acid that is found in the stomach.</p>
<p><strong> Fried Foods</strong></p>
<p>Foods that are fried and high in fat cause heartburn by prolonging the digestion process, which allows these types of foods to stay in the stomach longer than normal. After these types of foods are consumed, pressure is placed on the stomach and the lower esophageal sphincter, which causes the reflux of acids.</p>
<p><strong> Spicy Foods</strong></p>
<p>Most types of Mexican food, chili, salsa and foods containing pepper can worsen acid reflux. These types of foods can cause irritation of the stomach lining, which generates an increase in the amount of stomach acid that is produced.</p>
<p><strong>Peppermint</strong></p>
<p>While many people may believe that peppermint can relieve heartburn, it can actually trigger acid reflux. Peppermint and other types of mints cause the esophageal sphincter to relax, which causes heartburn by allowing acid to flow back into the esophagus.</p>
<p><strong>Garlic</strong></p>
<p>Foods that are prepared with garlic can also cause heartburn. Foods containing garlic can irritate the stomach and cause an increase in the amount of gastric acid that is produced.</p>
